For more information, visit the Trinity website at: www.trinitycommunications.org June 11, 2010 The new Charis House is a reality! In June 2010, Charis House realized a dream more than six years in the making. With the help of many volunteers and church groups, along with our residents and staff we made the transition into our new facility at Fairmount Place near Wells Street. 18 women and 11 children made the move with us to the new building. In the two weeks following the move, we were able to shelter 12 more women and 6 more children thanks to the bed space we have gained. By the time you read this, we will have housed dozens more still. The move came during a time when the need has never been greater. During the past year, Charis House was forced to turn away more than 100 women and children a month due to a lack of bed space. “Other shelters were full also. It just showed, when folks are already on the edge, the economy really affects them,” says Charis House Director, Rev. Patty Crisp. The new building, at about 24,000 square feet, has room for 78 homeless women and children – nearly double the capacity of the former facility at 533 W. Washington Blvd. The new commercial kitchen seats up to 120 people, which means everyone can eat together instead of in shifts, as in the past. The new facility also has more space for things like therapeutic groups, education, and developmentally appropriate rooms for children of all ages. But in a time where the need for shelters like Charis House is growing, support from people throughout the Fort Wayne area is vital. Although the physical move has been made, there is still much work to be done. “We still need the help of our community. We are actively seeking caring individuals to aid us in making this Ministry an even greater success through prayer, volunteer work, and financial support,” says Crisp. If you are interested in volunteering at Charis House, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Carlton Smith at 426-7357 ext. 18. If you are interested in a tour or making a contribution to our capital campaign, please contact our CEO, Rev. Donovan Coley at 426-7357 ext. 13. A list of items needed can be found on our website at www.rescueministries.us. June 2010 The Rescue Mission was recently featured in a Father's Day article in the Journal Gazette! Please check out the article, which provides some great insight into the lives of the individuals we serve. http://www.journalgazette.net/article/2010100629978
